No chance of any nuke debacle in Pakistan: Expert

Fukushima disaster should serve as a wake-up call

Islamabad: [March 31]

Nuclear expert Sultan Bashiruddin Mahmood on Thursday said there is zero probability of any nuclear disaster in Pakistan.

There are no chances of radiation in Japan reaching here to affect Pakistani people, he said.

Pakistan's nuclear disaster management capabilities and nuclear safety record is one of the best in the world and location of country is safe, Bashiruddin Mahmood said while speaking at a seminar held under the aegis of Nazaria Pakistan Centre.

He said that we have been dealing in the nuclear energy since 50 years while the Pakistan's first Karachi Nuclear Power Plant, (KANUPP) is operational since forty years without posing any threat that is ample proof of our safety standards and expertise.

"In my assessment, there is no chance of radioactive release from any nuclear facility due to technical breakdown or any other reason," said Mahmood.

At the occasion, Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) said that there is no report that our nuclear operators have disregarded safety procedures.

However, he said that Japan's nuclear disaster must open our eyes and enhanced procedures of safety should be adopted to strengthen protection.

Dr. Mughal said that all the countries having nuclear capabilities, including Pakistan should immediately revisit safety mechanism to avoid another Fukushima or Chernobyl, the biggest nuclear catastrophe in history.

The recent disaster should serve as a wake-up call as learning the lessons from the tragedies is critically important, he underlined.
