Pakistan has best business environment in region, UK's SME sector reluctant

Local businessmen aggressive, Pakistan exports increasing, UK's decreasing

"Do More" is not a helpful phrase. We all need to do more: Adam Thomson

Dated: June 28

Islamabad: British High Commissioner to Pakistan Adam Thomson on Tuesday said that his country is trying best to help Pakistan get access to EU market which is a critical issue.

We are trying to get EU trade concession of GSP Plus for Pakistan to get more Pakistani products would be introduced in Europe.

Talking to a high-profile delegation that included VP Saarc CCI Iftikhar Ali Malik, VP FPCCI Amir Atta Bajwa, Chairman FPCCI, Capital Office, Hameed Akhtar Chadda,

SVC, FPCCI Kanwar Qutbuddin and Chairman Media Malik Sohail, he said that he has been given task to double bilateral trade in four years.

For this we need to thicken political relations, improve people-to-people contacts and invite British businessmen to invest in Pakistan, he said.

Adam Thomson said that Pakistan has easiest business environment in region but UK's SME sector is still reluctant to invest here which will be only possible if local business community extend cooperation.

The envoy of one of the seven most industrialised countries in the world said that British exporters are not as aggressive as their Pakistani counterparts. This has resulted in increasing share of trade in favour of the Pakistan.

He said that he is inviting British investors to explore energy, super markets and other promising sectors.

At the occasion, Iftikhar Ali Malik, who is also former president FPCCI, said Pakistan is being deprived of due rights while other countries like Bangladesh are getting concessions.

He said that Reconstruction Opportunity Zones is not a viable idea which he has already told US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a meeting.

Iftikhar Ali Malik said that he has been trying for peace since fifteen years and now want support of diplomatic community. He asked UK to help boost regional trade.

Amir Atta Bajwa said that the relations between two governments depend on ties between people of these nations to which the High Commissioner agreed.

Hameed Akhtar Chadda raised questions about visa procedure and fees to get convincing answers.

To a question posed by Malik Sohail Hussian, the High Commissioner said that Pakistan has suffered more in war on terror than what it get in return. "Do More" is not a helpful phrase; we all [allies in war on terror] need to do more, he said.

Lauding an offer by Malik Sohail, Adam Thomson said that dispute resolution initiative by the FPCCI, Pakistan's Apex body of trade and commerce, is to encourage the UK's business community in a great way pushing them to make a beeline to invest in Pakistan.

Visibly delighted, he said that he is immediately informing his superiors about the offer by FPCCI. This development will attract investors from all over the world, he added.

The High Commissioner also agreed to explore business exchange programmes and assured support in upgrading FPCCI's R&D section in the new building at Islamabad to boost its capacity.

Ruling out any mediation between Pakistan and India, he said that there is no better way outside trade to foster relations. However, he added that UK will continue to work for improved ties between two neighbours in the background.

Thomson said that Pakistani nation and businessmen are one of the most resilient people on earth who can face anything.

Master Plan for rural electrification through renewable energy demanded

Energy crisis greatest bottleneck in supply of resources to economy

Islamabad: [June 26]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday said that alternative forms of energy are becoming more cost-competitive with conventional fuels therefore government should accelerate the pace of its development.

Energy crisis is greatest bottleneck in the supply of resources to our economy; it is biggest problem than terrorism, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.

He said that some areas will have to brave 23-hour load shedding by 2020 if development of energy resources was not given proper attention.

He said that industrial development, commercial activities, population growth and inefficiency are main causes for the crisis while the rising costs of fossil fuels coupled with volatility has made alternatives more attractive.

Moreover, construction costs of oil, gas, coal and nuclear power plants have jumped by 80 per cent in five years which calls for investing in renewable energy, he said adding that we need to realise that economics of traditional fuels are changing.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that gap is closing between price of fossil fuels and alternatives, and later will not be considered an expensive option in the days to come.

He said that globally over 1.7 billion people have no access to power; over 170 million people in Southeast Asia are un-electrified with majority having no chance to get grid connectivity in their lifetime.

These rural people are barred from benefits of electricity and stopped from mechanization of farms for greater productivity which keep them poor.

Lauding the move by AEDB and FFC Energy to explore wind power projects he said that Pakistan's government and private sector needs to explore more wind corridors, complete projects in pipeline and also consider utilising exceptional level or irradiation available throughout the country.

Government as well as business community needs to introduce green hotels, cars, heaters, notebooks, motorcycles and lighting systems. Those investing in alternative energy should be given maximum benefits and tax breaks and there should be no policy ambiguity, he demanded.

"We urgently need a master plan for rural electrification through renewable energy" Dr. Mughal demanded. Private sector should also be encouraged to invest in such a programme.

Such transitional steps will also help us fight climate change for which help of international lending institutions is imperative, he said.

Constitutionally-protected economic advisory board demanded

Dated: June 22

Islamabad: Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) and Saarc Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Saarc CCI) has demanded of the government to overturn Trade Organisations Ordinance 2007 and reintroduce Trade Organisations Act 1961 after necessary amendments.

The Ordinance enacted on June 5, 2007 hasn't been approved by the National Assembly is it not serving economy, business community or nation, said Senator Haji Ghulam Ali, President FPCCI.

Speaking at a reception hosted in honour in Federal Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Moula Baksh Chandio, he said that economic growth is difficult unless laws governing the businesses are altered to suit the needs of business community.

Senator Ghulam Ali said that the role of regulators needs to be strengthened to guarantee enabling environment for business community which is in the national interest.

"We will be better positioned to focus on exports once we settle our problems at home," the Senator said.

At the occasion, Iftikhar Ali Malik, VP Saarc CCI said that we have one of the most controlled economies where laws are not supporting growth in businesses.

He said we need a constitutionally-protected economic advisory board on the pattern of Indonesia which can ensure consistency and continuity in policies while remaining above the political considerations. However, he quickly added, this is something alien to our country.

Malik said that laws pertaining to trademarks, piracy, IPR should be improved so that the investors can take interest in Pakistani market.

"Trade Development Fund," is an additional burden on business community which has not served any purpose so far.

The VP, Saarc CCI said that we should know about the usage of funds generated through TDF.

Federal Minister Moula Baksh Chandio assured the business community of resolution of all just demands.

He said that business community can meet him anytime with solid proposal and recommendations aimed at improvement or countermanding any existing laws.

He said that all the changes would be made with the entire stakeholder on board adding that all the legal support would be ensured to promote trade and business activities for industrial development in the country.

Govt policies repelling investment

Massive private capital leaving country

Negative return on deposits a reason behind capital flight

Islamabad: [19 June]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday said the policies of the government are repelling the investment and indirectly supporting flight of capital at a time when it is badly needed at home.

Capital flight proves that some investors are not only disturbed but have lost faith in the economic policies of the government, it said.

The disappearance of wealth can result in sharp drop in the exchange rate leaving authorities with no option but to choke productive sector to keep it reserves intact, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.

He said that revelation of Malaysian Consul General that Pakistanis have transferred 2.1 billion dollars to Kuala Lumpur is shocking.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that majority of those who have shifted money belongs to Karachi which speak volumes about the feeling of people living in the commercial and industrial hub of Pakistan.

Flight of 2.1 billion dollars is tip of the iceberg as 99 per cent of such transactions are not recorded on the books, he said

"Another reason behind capital flight is the negative return depositors get from banking companies since decades," he said adding that money is channelling to countries offering higher interest rates.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that some controversial taxes help governments earn some additional funds but it cost country a lot in shape of billions flowing outward.

Government should revisit policies otherwise sustained flight of capital will bring economy to knees, he warned.

He said that there is an urgent need that economic managers prove their vision otherwise investors will continue to shy away keeping Pakistan dependent on loans and donations.

Kalabagh merits having a steel mill: Raza Khan

Islamabad: (June 19)

Chairman Coordination, FPCCI Raza Khan on Sunday said Kalabagh merits having a big steel mill as the area has significant iron ore deposits.

Government has long been neglecting exploiting ten thousand million tonnes of proven deposits since a decade which is not in the national interest, he said.

Kalabagh can be home of the second largest steel mill which will not only boost economy but also provide jobs to thousands of people living in that underdeveloped area, he said.

Talking to industrialists at Hattar Industrial Estate, he said that government should establish a steel mill in Kalabagh which will also save precious foreign exchange wasted on import of scrap.

Raza Khan said that despite around 600 units, our industry is to go a long way to develop finished products of international quality, adding that per capital consumption of steel is around 36 kg which is discouraging as that global average intake stands at 198 kg.

Limited consumption show that infrastructure growth in our country is sluggish, he said.

The frequent problems faced by Pakistan Steel Mills, the largest industrial unit in Pakistan could be tackled through establishing small steel mills at different localities, he said.

Raza said that prices of steel should be realistic and millers should get relaxation on taxes imposed on their electricity bills as power is used as raw material in melting and rerolling units.

The supply of electricity and gas to the furnaces should be increased while unscheduled load shedding is also a major factor for losses. Authorities should give advance notices for any load shedding, he demanded.

SC asked to probe petro shortages

Islamabad: [June 12]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday asked to Supreme Court to intervene in the issue of petroleum shortages across the country and bring culprits to justice.

It also sought the resignation of Minister for Petroleum Dr. Asim Hussain whose 'revolutionary measures' have backfired at a time he was abroad.

Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority should also share blame for its incompetence which has allowed oil mafia to play mayhem with the masses, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.

Over a month has passed since the crisis began but the government is still helpless; all it can do is to call meetings which justify the intervention of the higher judiciary in the matter, he said.

Orders to close CNG stations for two days should be withdrawn and this cheap fuel should be made available seven days a week so that a part of harassed motorists can take a sigh of relief.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that major players in the oil chain including refiners and marketing companies have apparently ganged up to increase their windfall while ministries and the regulator are acting in collusion.

Issues like poor financial health of oil companies, Rs 421 billion petroleum sector's circular debt, and cut of around three billion on subsidy for refineries in the recent budget which has annoyed many should be tackled on war footings, he demanded.

The Supreme Court should probe that why the companies failed to keep stocks of 20 days which is mandatory and that the shortage was deliberate or natural, he demanded.

Additionally it must be investigated that why plate-formers of three refineries stopped working simultaneously, why there were no alternate arrangements in place and why efforts to fill the supply gas proved counterproductive and who has allowed filling stations to fleece the people.

Economic stability hidden in proper education: FPCCI

Education, stronger nation goes paralled: Raza Khan

Importance of practical training for students need attention

Balance between theory and application imperative

Islamabad: (June 11)

Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) on Saturday said standard of education needs to be improved so that economy can get a boost.

Good educational institutions are imperative to develop country, economy and society in these times of rapid changes and slowing momentum of higher education, said said Raza Khan, Chairman Coordination, FPCCI.

Speaking as Chief Guest at the opening ceremony of 6th Sales Gala, organised National University of Modern Languages (NUML), he said that there are gaps between education and application that needs to be bridged for the sake of future generations.

He said that process of learning could be made more effective if the students are exposed to the real working conditions where they can apply their knowledge. Unfortunately, we lack such a culture, he added.

Such initiatives help business students gain experience and enhance skills like planning, organising finances, proficiency, techniques, communications, negotiation, bargaining, convincing, etc, said Raza Khan.

He said that most of the educational institutions and business schools have yet to realise importance of transforming technical knowledge into practical training which leave students unprepared to face real life challenges.

We must understand that theoritical education cannot be strengthened in absence of practical training, he said.

The FPCCI official told students that honesty and commitments are the best and cheapest tools to attract customers.

He lauded the initiative of NUML calling it a truly training session for the students adding that students have done wonders.

"Organisers of the event deserve full credit for this wonderful trade fair," said Raza Khan adding that such events should be held twice a year.

Earlier, the chief guest visited stalls, appreciated the efforts of students as well as sponsors, and advised as well as probed them with questions.

The event was a unique blend of theory and practice to help the students understand the fundamentals and trends in business and explore opportunities.
