Personal, professional commitment must for excellence

She said that business grows with enhanced professional self-confidence while there is no future for those whose business or thoughts are stagnant.

Women are weak in time management as well as spending workday time and energy, she observed. Studying pattern of successful people will save time and energy, not to mention money, she added.

Written goals are imperative for a satisfying future as it help a businesswomen to remained focused, said Samina.

Procrastination is the enemy of business while positive actions, contentment, balance, relaxation and rejuvenation pay dividends, she said adding that research shows that happy people make more money.

Others present on the occasion were Unido International Trainer Jeff Readman, Chairman PASDEC Ihsan Ullah Khan, National Programme Coordinator UNIDO Shahina Waheed, Pervain Khan of FWBL, Saleha Kapadia, Trainer EPI, Shahid ur Rehman, Programme Manager EPI Areefa Azam, and others.

Businesswomen usually don't realize which activities are actually helping them and which are wastage of time and finances. They also lack skills to network, exchange ideas and information, and associate with people who can lift them up, the speakers said.

Majority of women would prefer to remain in their comfort zones that keep their limits confined. Successful women learn how to empower themselves that keep them going forward in the years to come, the speakers concluded.

Revamping CGT to pollute stock markets

People losing interest, faith in government, stock business

Stock exchanges to become hub of money launderers, tax evaders

Enhanced money-laundering opportunities to bring a bad name to country

Role of a famous NRO banker is the Reshma Rental Power case remained unnoticed

Islamabad: [Jan 29]

International tax consultant and expert on studying international money laundering operations and drug economy, Dr Ikramul Haq, on Sunday said allowing injection of black money in the stock markets will not only facilitate money laundering but also have negative impact for much-needed revenue generation initiatives.

Approval of the proposal on revamping the Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is a counter move to FBR's efforts to expand tax net, he said.

Extending immunity to tax cheats is violation of provisions of Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2010 as well as breach of international treaties signed by Pakistan, "it certainly amounts to sponsoring financial crimes," said Dr Ikramul Haq.

Talking to Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President of the Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW), he said that the move is meant to facilitate ruthless brokers' mafia who fleece masses, hurt small investors, and manage funds of plunderers of national wealth.

Dr Ikramul Haq observed that giving legal cover to the money amassed by the corrupt, tax evaders, criminals, and drug traffickers cannot be justified under any circumstances.

At the occasion, Huzaima Bukhari, tax expert and Adjunct Professor at LUMS, said that state patronage to whitening dirty money is bound to transform Pakistan into one of the hubs of money laundering in the world. Corruption is destroying moral fabric of the society, she added.

International banking consultant Mohsin Rafique said that giving amnesty to the big fish in stock markets would further tarnish faith of masses in the system.

Role of a NRO banker is the Reshma Rental Power Plant case remained unnoticed that if investigated can result in startling revelations, said Rafique.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that small brokerage houses and individual brokers are losing interest in the business; total number of registered brokerage houses stood at 276 by the end of financial year 2011 as compared to 299 in 2010.

The KSE accounts for 52 per cent of the total brokers as compared to 29 per cent at the LSE and 19 per cent at the ISE, 93 per cent are brokerage houses while 7 per cent are individual brokers, he said.

He said that after every market crash, a broker emerged as owner of a bank. A top official who tried to safeguard interests of masses was shown the door during Eid holidays that left regulator impotent.

Dr. Mughal said that brokers' mafia, known for price manipulation, blank sales, wash trades, insider trading, inter-exchange trades, provision of false information, non-compliance with Brokers and Agent Registration Rules, 2001, violation of general regulations and regularly trespassing Code of Conduct will now enjoy renewed strength.

IMPROVED AND REPEATED

New Takaful rules to benefit millions

Islamic insurance penetration to ensure stability

Islamabad: [Jan 24]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Tuesday said SECP's move to push Sharia compliant risk coverage in Pakistan is to benefit millions and triple insurance density as well as penetration.

Islamic insurance can benefit those who do not subscribe to the conventional insurance forbidden by the Sharia law. This Halal risk mitigation has been growing 15 per cent annually, however it grew 31 pc in 2011, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President of the PEW.

He said that approval Draft Takaful Rules 2012, plan to set up a central Sharia board, and allowing conventional insurers to initiate Takaful operations are the steps which should have been taken before.

Pakistanis spend around Rs 107 billion on life and non-life insurance or Rs 593 per capita which is one of the lowest in the world, , he informed.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that current insurance penetration in Pakistan stands at around 0.7 per cent while insurance density is recorded at 6.13 dollars.

He said that share of Takaful is 1 per cent of the global insurance market while it enjoy 2 pc of the market in Pakistan which is to get a boost as the top ten companies having 93 per cent of the market share are preparing to exploit the potential.

According to Ernst & Young, global Takaful contributions which were $9.15 billion in 2010 and $12 bl in 201, are expected to touch $25 bl by 2015.

Muslims are 20 pc of the world's population but Takaful has 1pc share that underline the need for immediate legislation and ambitious penetration.

Media-Tribe> PR--Energy ministry aims contrary to national interests

Masses being misguided on the CNG issue

Energy ministry aims contrary to national interests

Islamabad: [Jan 18 ]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Wednesday said masses are being misinformed on the issue of compressed natural gas (CNG) to benefit few influential.

Present CNG consumption in country is not more than 8 per cent but those who want to relieve masses of their hard-earned money have targeted it, it said.

Import of any alternative fuel will cost additional billions as far as modifications of vehicles, establishing new filling stations, industrial units for conversion and reconfiguration of while system is concerned, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President of the PEW.

Import will also eat up huge foreign exchange which is badly needed in the country, he added.,

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said CNG sector is facing a planned conspiracy while those who matter are behind unethical allocation of gas.

He informed that 600 mcf gas per day is being provided to two power stations owned by an influential politician which is 15 per cent of the total production—almost double than the total consumption of CNG.

Merit is being ignored in provision of gas to the power producers which is sending very wrong signals, he noted.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that masses have a right to know the names of all stakeholders in one of the biggest fertiliser plant in the country which was allowed to commence operations despite shortage of gas.

Who allowed establishment of such a huge project and who are the beneficiaries leaving shares of other companies worthless, he questioned.

Additionally, he said, masses must know that what happened to the plan to import LNG; how a company become bankrupt and who made masses pay for the failure of a well-connected industrialist.

He said that ministry of energy should accept incompetence and mismanagement. It should stop misguiding masses to ensure smooth flow of their plans that are opposite to the national interests.

Turkmen gas project costly, uncertain

TAPI gas pipeline no alternative to Iranian gas

Karzai administration may fail to keep TAPI online

Local exploration, LNG import arrangements unsatisfactory

US, donors support to TAPI unhelpful in resolving Pakistan gas crisis

Islamabad: [Jan 15]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday said Government has been wasting time on a costly and highly uncertain Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project while ignoring the only viable option of importing gas from Iran.

America is opposing Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline Project to counter Tehran's influence while throwing full weight behind TAPI to benefit western multinational companies that enjoy control over Dauletabad gas reserves, it said.

Increasing stakes of American elite in the oil and gas giants has become a threat to stability of many countries, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President of the PEW.

He said that the US policies have been damaging Pakistan while our government seems reluctant to move forward with plan to import natural gas from Iran despite knowing that there is no proper substitute available.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that the performance local oil and gas exploration and production companies remain unsatisfactory while efforts to import LNG could not be materialised.

He said that the proposed TAPI, if materialised, may not help Pakistan in the long run as it is a part of US hidden agenda behind war on terror which can be best described in two words—oil and gas.

The Nov 25 statement of US Ambassador to Pakistan in which he opposed Iran gas pipeline and supported gas import from Turkmenistan was contrary to the facts and our interests, he observed.

Dr. Mughal said that Pakistan cannot ignore global energy giant Iran, on the cost of its economy, to fulfil objectives of controversial US foreign policy.

He said that the top government functionaries in Islamabad are assuring everybody that the Iran gas plans remain unchanged but the facts appears otherwise.

Peace pipeline is a practical idea in comparison to unfeasible TAPI which will cross Afghanistan's Southern regions, he noted.

The weak, inefficient and corrupt Karzai administration may not be capable of taking care of the mega project, he feared.

UIG completes acquisition of Network Microfinance Bank

Providing credit to poor remains a challenge: Mian Shahid

Islamabad: Jan 15

United International Group (UIG) has completed acquisition of Network Microfinance Bank Limited (NMB), which will be renamed as Apna Microfinance Bank.

The NMB, previously part of the JS Group, which started operations in January 2005, will prove an asset providing an opportunity to support unbanked population, said Mian Shahid, Chairman UIG.

Speaking at a ceremony, he said that poor and low-income groups remain deprived of proper financial services which is impeding their development.

He said that 56 per cent of the adult population has no access to formal financial services while only 10 per cent of SMEs are served by banks resulting in socio-economic disparities.

Traditionally, banks would ignore providing loans to poor therefore microfinance banks should come forward to bridge the financial divide, he stressed.

Mian Shahid said that SME sector is backbone of the economy which can minimise inequality only if strengthened. Some policies need to be revisited, he demanded.

Apart from conventional banking, Pakistan also needs a strong banking system based on mutual trust, local accountability, participation, creativity and community involvement, he observed.

Microcredit can cause reduction in interest rates by 30-60 per cent and increase the level of savings among the poor, he informed.

He said that Bangladesh, Kenya, India, South Africa, and Sri Lanka have been performing well in the micro finance sector while we have yet to go a long way.

Mian Shahid said that we will focus on providing financial services to farmers, agriculture market, small sized businesses and individuals.

He said that recent decision by Pacra to maintain "A" credit rating of United Insurance Company, the main component of UIG and bringing Saudi Pak Insurance Company back to profit proves that dedicated teamwork and caring management model always pay dividends.

PACRA Maintains IFS rating of United Insurance Company

UIC acquiring companies, banks: Mian Shahid

Islamabad: Jan 12

The Pakistan Credit Rating Agency (PACRA) has maintained the IFS rating of The United Insurance Company of Pakistan Limited (UIC) at "A" (Single A). The rating denotes strong capacity to meet policyholder and contract obligations. Risk factors are moderate, and the impact of any adverse business and economic factors is expected to be small.

The rating reflects UIC's strong risk absorption capacity emanating from a robust financial base that adequately supports the company's high growth stance. The company's business plan predominantly focuses on wide-spread small sized business volumes. Although this has led to high business acquisition cost, the benefits are accrued in the form of low loss ratio, engendering superior underwriting performance compared to peers. The rating incorporates improved control environment supplemented by real time IT platform.

The rating is dependent on management's ability to successfully execute its business strategy of diversification and growth, while preserving underwriting profitability. A more structured approach towards claim handling, thereby bringing clarity as to the claims processing and reporting mechanism, would remain critical for the rating. Meanwhile, strengthening of governance framework, bringing further oversight to the corporate strategy, and compliance to the regularity matters are important.

At the occasion, Mian Shahid, Chairman said that UIC will continue to serve masses and boost insurance industry as well as its image in country and abroad.

He said that insurance industry is vital part of the economy which needs further support of the government and masses as well. The insurance industry should further efforts to serve masses through corporate social responsibility initiatives, said Mian Shahid.

He said that we are expanding our network by acquiring other companies and a microfinance bank.

Media-Tribe> PR--Govt Real LPG Mafia

Changed, Improved and Repeated

Govt Responsible For LPG price hike

State-run companies acting as mafia

Islamabad: Jan 09

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Monday said recent hike in Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices is unjust and against the interest of masses braving severe weather.

It is not the private sector but state-owned enterprises –working as a mafia--that are responsible for frequent hike in the price of LPG, it said.

Decision of upward revision of LPG prices by Rs 11331 to Rs 92188 per tonne by cannot be justified, as there is no indication of any increase in cost of production, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President of the PEW.

LPG production cost hardly cross Rs 22000 per tonne and addition of 16 per cent GST add 3520 to it, he said.

He said that around 75 per cent production of LPG is controlled by government which is earning billions by unjustified hikes. Such moves automatically benefits private producers as well as eighty marketing companies, he added.

He said that there should be some check on the moves of LPG producers who are playing havoc with masses in biting winter when demand is increased by around 700 tonnes per day.

Prices is regularly been revised upward while local production remain stagnant at 900 tonnes, he informed.
