RE: [PMG] PR--Business community welcomes Indian group expansion in Pakistan

Dear Sir,

I am Chairman of the Pakistan, India UK Friendship Forum.

I like to see the day when there will be free trade between India, Afghanistan, Iran, China and the Central Russian States through Pakistan, thus making Pakistan an epicentre of trade between over a billion Indians and the rest of the population of these countries, Insha Allah.

If this happens, then there will no unemployment or poverty in Pakistan.

Pakistan will become a Japan of the Sub Continent. Guaranteed.

When we do not help others, then we also do not help ourselves.

Govt asked to improve food security situation

Business community welcomes Indian group expansion in Pakistan

Attock: Dated: August 22

The Attock Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) on Wednesday asked government to improve its deteriorating ranking in food security index as almost half of the country’s population remains food insecure.

Every person has a right to physical and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food on consistent basis that fulfils the dietary needs for living an active and healthy life, it said.

Pakistan has been placed at 75th position amongst the 105 countries ranked by the Global Food Security Index 2012 which has raised concerns, said Tariq Mehmood, President Attock Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Speaking to business community, he said that affordability, availability and quality of the food in Pakistan needs serious review as it has been ranked lower despite increase in agriculture output which indicates lack of efforts to combat growing hunger, he added.

The business leaders said that Sri Lanka and India have performed better than Pakistan by securing 62nd and 66th positions on the index.

Tariq Mehmood, who is also Director Pak-UK Business Council and Chairman FPCCI Committee on Health, said that government should think seriously about providing cover to 61 million food insecure people which is a major national issue.

Rising food prices, floods, poverty, conflicts, terrorism, energy crisis, economic slowdown and political instability are some of the factors behind hunger, he observed.

Government should consider other aspects of food security besides increasing the wheat production as a bumper wheat crop in the few districts does not guarantee that the rest of the country would have better access to staple, he noted.

Meanwhile, the ACCI welcomed the move by the Indian consumer goods group Godrej to establish operations in Pakistan to become USD 33 billion conglomerate soon. This is a sign of deepening trade between Saarc’s largest neighbours.

The ACCI office bearers and members said that Pakistan is the sixth largest country in the world in terms of population which provide great opportunities for the overseas investors.

USD 83 billion India Tata group is also stepping into Pakistani market while Mian Mohammad Mansha is also opening banks in India, such moves were not possible without the efforts of national business leaders Tariq Sayeed and Iftikhar Ali Malik who devoted their lives for improved ties between two nuclear-armed states, they observed.

Both countries should expedite economic and political reforms and allow direct investments, the businessmen demanded.

[Media-Tribe] PR--Islamic banking growth impressive

Islamic banking growth in Pakistan impressive: Attock Chamber

Islamic banking should be the first choice of masses: Tariq Mehmood

People have started appreciating the benefits of interest-free banking

Islamabad: Dated: August 02

The Attock Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) said on Thursday that growth rate of Islamic banking in Pakistan is very impressive.

A decade back Pakistan had only one Islamic bank while now we have five Islamic banks and Islamic banking branches representing all the top ten conventional banks, it said.

75 countries have recognised Islamic banking; major banks including HSBC, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank and Standard Chartered have Islamic banking branches or windows which prove success of Riba-free banking, said Tariq Mehmood, President Attock Chamber of Commerce.

Over nine hundred Islamic banking branches in Pakistan speak of the confidence of the masses in the Islamic banking and the successful handling of regulator, he added.

He said that the share of Islamic banks in the assets of all the banks can exceed ten per cent in the current fiscal if introduction of new products is focused.

Tariq Mehmood asked the Islamic banks to exploit the full potential of interest-free banking, expand network, offer new products to reach to underserved sectors and unbanked population.

Tariq Mehmood, who is also Director Pak-UK Business Council and Chairman FPCCI Committee on Health, said that Islamic banks should maintain the image of better risk managers which is necessary for depositor's confidence.

The deposit base of Islamic banking has been expanding faster than general banking due to speedy and better returns which is a very healthy development, he maintained.

Tariq asked Islamic banks to keep an eye on global strategies, remain Shariah compliant and find ways to improve rates of return to match inflation which will boost confidence of masses in Islamic banking.

Islamic banks have remained unharmed during the global financial collapse which has also saved investments of masses, the business leader observed.

RE: [Media-Tribe] PR--Hurting, demoralising spy agencies termed unwise

Sir,
I must commend you for suggesting a way out, the right way out,  for the gross neglect which has pushed Balochistan into present state. I do not know what are the basis of your opinion but you are fairly accurate.  If I may also give my opinion?  I suggest the following:

1.  In my opinion, Army is not needed in Balochistan as the number of militants/insurgents is small, indeed. They operate in a void of governance with complete freedom, no police, non- effective  civil administration and often supported by the ministers themselves. A firm governance, efficient police, judiciary which can punish in matter of weeks/months, some help from army in supporting the police-role of FC, and active foreign office support will succeed in turning around Balochistan in matter of weeks.

2. The existing crowed of entire provincial assembly, who sits on treasury benches, is itself involved in a big way in insurgency and crime, with an exception of a few, who either  do not raise their voice being weak, or belong to JUI, who in any case always follows the path of least resistance. The ministers/advisers are themselves sponsoring kidnappings for ransoms, looting of buses, even killings of their enemies and they provide full protection to criminals. Lawyers, judges and media are so scared that the guilty run freely and anti Pakistan elements are not checked. Billions given by federation have been eaten away creating serious anti-government feelings as no socio-economic development is taking place and people are suffering.

3. The MPA, i.e all ministers/advisers should  be taken in protective custody as soon as the governor rule is imposed while special courts try them for their crimes and criminal incompetence. To start with, they all have been given first Rs. 250 millions per year and now Rs. 300 millions for "development". They should be asked to prove the fair use of this money and why did they fail in the trust placed in them by virtue of being made a minister and violated the oath they took.

3. A firm governor, ( not Magsi Sahib, not a politician or judge) with police and FC can turn around the province in matter of weeks. Of course, through an ordnance, B Areas is to be reverted back to pre-2009 status of A Area and rag tag Levies bearing allegiance to sardars, made Police again. Other provinces will have to extend help to train and fill the gaps in criminal investigations.

4. Army's assistance would be needed in coordinating intelligence, totally restricting any autonomous action by agencies, and to provide operational mobility to  FC and police.

5. Special courts on the lines of Italy to try mafia, with judges and lawyers wearing masks, or military courts, if the CJ of SC allows, will have to be arranged. (The Honourable SCCJ has not yet accepted the reality that major powers are supporting an insurgency in Balochistan. He sill thinks that FC and intelligence agencies are being high handed here, which is totally wrong. The judicial system has totally been compromised and killers must be killed through extra-judicial measures. This is normal in a war. CJ must understand this.)

6. There are many pro Pakistan sardars in Baloch / Brahui areas who will take a sigh of releif when "government" decides to place trust in them, rather than the stooges masquerading as defenders of Baloch on behest of CIA, RAW and MI6,

7.  Finally, while the governor rule must go on for at least 3 years to ensure all criminals are punished and  normalcy returns, FO must aggressively pursue reduction of US, India and UK involvement in insurgency in Balochistan.

Governor's Rule, mili operation demanded in Balochistan
Hurting, demoralising last line of defence termed unwise

Dated: July 26
The Punjab Forum on Thursday said the Supreme Court ruling regarding complete constitutional breakdown in the province of Balochistan should be taken seriously by the Government.

Situation in the volatile province can only be normalised by initiating a massive military operation after imposing Governor's Rule, it said.

The civilian government and administrative machinery has failed to deliver which calls for decisive action, said Baig Raj, President, Punjab Forum.

He said that provincial government has failed to control crimes like target killings, extortion and kidnapping for ransom due to lack of capacity and will.

Similarly, FC can maintain law and order in the province to some extent but its presence is no substitute to a full-fledged military operation against terrorists backed by powerful nations.

He said that businesses, schools, government offices and even courts in Balochistan are working due to protection provided by the FC. Baluchistan is still part of Pakistan due to the sacrifices offered by the FC and ISI, he added.

We need to encourage FC and ISI which is battling terrorists and laying down lives to defend Pakistan and Pakistanis, he said adding that agencies are fighting our war and demoralising last line of defence is unwise.

Baig Raj said that it appears that everyone is looking at situation from the angel preferred by the anti-state elements. Majority of state institutions are trying best to please terrorists and discourage elements defending the motherland.

This has encouraged BLA and other terrorists who are now targeting Pashtoons and the diplomats of friendly countries. This is the time when Army should leave barracks.

Pseudo-intellectuals are advocating negotiations with secular terrorists but they want merciless operation against jihadis in Fata which is hypocrisy.

If majority of institutions continued to treat traitors as VIPs on the behest of US, it will inflict great harm to Pakistan, warned Baig Raj.

[Media-Tribe] Three Urdu/English News – CSF optimism, French ambassador and IPO Grading

Optimism on CSF compensation temporary: ACCI

Govt asked to initiate reforms, take economy seriously

Islamabad: Dated: July 15

The Attock Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) on Sunday said the optimism following expected release of the held up Coalition Support Funds of $1.2bn by the US is temporary.

Markets have responded positively, rupee has strengthened while dollar is retreating after reopening of Nato critical supply route which raised hopes for CSF reimbursement that can help reduce financial pressure on the government, it said.

Release of the held up money will boost non-tax revenues, reduce government's reliance on borrowings and shrink current account gap for some time, said Tariq Mehmood, President ACCI while talking to business community here.

The relief will be temporary, sustainable relief can only be ensured if rulers pay some attention to the economy which has taken a backseat since long, he added.

He said that ignoring good governance and continued focus on publication of currency will not only push inflation up but also continue to deprive private sector of credit.

Pakistan will continue to face threat of cut in international credit rating if it failed to introduce meaningful reforms, he warned.

Tariq Mehmood who is also Chairman FPCCI Standing Committee on Health,

And Director Pak-UK Business Council said that domestic debt has touched mark of 7.5 trillion rupees, energy crisis is pulling economy down and private investment has been reduced by 12.5 per cent while foreign investment is dismal.

Apart from remittances, country needs some eight billion dollars annually to remain afloat otherwise forex reserves will come under severe pressure and country will not be able to offer jobs to unemployed whom number is swelling by two million per annum, he said.

Government should take note of the gloomy situation and initiate reforms otherwise situation will become out of control.

The key to resolution of problem is not in aid or loans but trade, reforms and good governance, said Tariq.

France striving for GSP plus status for Pakistani products

French carmakers interested in Pakistani market

Dated: July 15

Islamabad:

Ambassador of France to Pakistan Philippe Thiebaud has said Paris is willing to cooperate with Islamabad to enhance its exports to the European markets.

He said that France is striving for a Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) plus status for Pakistani products. Moreover, we are helping Pakistan resolve energy crisis by financing dams and introducing energy efficiency practices, he said.

Ambassador Thiebaud said that promoting relations with Pakistan which is one of the largest trade partners of the European Union is the priority of my country.

This he said this while talking to Chairman FPCCI Standing Committee on Diplomatic Affairs Sheikh Humayun Sayeed. Chairman Media FPCCI Malik Sohail Hussain and Head of Economic Department, French Embassy Dominique Simon were also present on the occasion.

Among EU, France has second largest presence in Pakistan after Germany, 80 French companies have subsidiaries here while 180 companies of two countries are involved in bilateral trade and we have no complaints, the envoy said.

He added that French automakers have shown interest in Pakistani market while many other big companies have recognised Pakistan as a great investment destination.

Thiebaud said that over 600 Master's and PhD students are currently studying in France while more is being done to facilitate Pakistani students.

While acknowledging the contribution of private sector in boosting relations, he said that social, cultural, political and business exchanges are imperative for the development of ties.

At the occasion, Chairman FPCCI Committee on Diplomatic Affairs Sheikh Humayun Sayeed said that Pakistan has the potential to export quality fruits, rice, fashion garments, leather and sports goods.

French brands have proved their worth in local market while many they have found situation favourable for long-term investment, he said adding that we should have access to French markets.

Sayeed called for enhanced French language programmes in Pakistan which can open opportunities for Pakistan in 34 countries where French is the official language.

Malik Sohail Hussain said bilateral trade was growing by 20 per cent per annum since few years but now the energy crisis has declined it. France should come forward to help overcome energy crisis as she has solid expertise in the coal power generation.

Government should initiate efforts to meet 27 conventions on good governance to qualify for GSP plus which will boost economy and collections and reduce unemployment, said Sohail.

Call for introduction of IPO grading system in Pakistan

Investors' confidence can move the stagnant economy

Dated July 15

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday asked the government to introduce initial public offerings (IPO) grading system in Pakistan to restore confidence of investors and boost dry market.

IPO grading serves as a tool for additional information and assistance to investors enabling them to take proper decisions after getting realistic picture of a company.

This service is very useful to retail investors who seek to invest in companies that are little known or unknown in the equity markets, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.

.

A grade is not a recommendation to buy shares but only an independent, reliable and logical evaluation of the fundamentals of a company going in for an IPO, he said.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said grading covers different aspects of the issuing company like management's competence, marketing and other strategies, growth prospects, operating efficiency, financial flexibility, asset and accounting quality, and profitability.

It also covers situation of the economy, business environment for the company and risk factors which helps investors to make an independent judgement, he added.

He said that IPO market can get a boost if it is made mandatory for the companies to get a rating before public offering which must be disclosed to the regulator and the investors.

Protection of small investors can be ensured if the grading details are included in the company's documents and in the advertisements; he said adding that all the documents should be open for inspection by potential investors before any IPO.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan, one of the most important departments of the country, can initiate steps making grading obligatory for all the companies interested in getting approval for an IPO.

Such steps will restore confidence of the small investors in the stock market will give a boost to the economy.

Presently companies are left with no option but to opt for costly borrowing from the commercial banks which sometimes result in complications, he said.

[Media-Tribe] PR--CJP asked to take note of mismanagement in EOBI

CJP asked to take note of mismanagement in EOBI

EOBI becomes partner in DHA, Bahria Town plunder: Col Tariq

Islamabad: June 01

Former Director Engineering DHA Islamabad Lt. Col. M Tariq Kamal (Retired) has asked the Chief Justice Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to take note of massive irregularities in the Employees Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) before it goes bankrupt.

EOBI top officials after plundering the national wealth to the tune of billions have now joined hands with Defence Housing Authority (DHA) and Bahria Town in a bid to get billionaire overnight, he said.

Col Tariq said that he has already informed army chief, NAB, FIA, police, and all other related institutions about corrupt practices but to no avail.

Later, he said, he invoked the Islamabad High Court about the shady deal between the DHA and  Bahria Town in which the formed gifted 400 kanals of precious land to the later illegally, free of cost and without getting any assurance.

Subsequently, the IHC in February 2012 vide order number 419/2012 ordered the police to register a FIR against the accused, initiate investigations and inform court. However the police did not moved despite judicial orders.

Col Tariq said that now Malik Riaz of Bahria Town has sold 312 kanals of disputed land to EOBI for Rs 16 billion. Those who are involved in this deal include the administration of DHA, Bahria Town and Chairman EOBI Zafar Iqbal Gondal who is younger brother of Federal Minister Nazar Gondal, he said.

Surprisingly, EOBI was in so haste to buy land at double the market price that it ignored all the formalities that also included DHA Ordinance and directives of Ministry of Human Resource Development under which it is works.

He said that EOBI has made many shady deals which have put a questions mark on the survival of the institution which has remained self-sufficient and which is supposed to keep the interests of over five million retired labourers, orphans and widows.

The other issues in the EOBI such as making rash investments, purchasing disputed properties and banglows, awarding contract at higher rates, over payments, financial irregularities, hiding accounts and deals from auditors, abnormal fluctuations in profits, payments made in the names of consultancy, legal and professional fees, high repair maintenance cost, bad debt expenses, management and operating expenses etc. merit a thorough probe, he demanded.

"Only independent judiciary can probe the matter on merit and bring to book those who benefitted from the deal between DHA, EOBI and Bahria Town in which unbelievably exorbitant price was paid," said Col Tariq.

[Media-Tribe] PR--Asian leaders’ vows strong economic coalition for prosperity

Asian leaders' vows strong economic coalition for prosperity

Islamabad:

Perceiving global economic crisis of 2008 and recent debt crisis of Eurozone, the economic leaders of South Asia and China on Tuesday vowed for stronger economic coalition for booming Asia by encouraging and promoting "Look East" Policy.

This was decided in the 7th China-South Asia Business Forum (CSABF) commenced in the Kunming, China.

The forum was jointly inaugurated by Commerce Minister Makhdum Amin Fahim and Mr. Wang Jinzhen, Vice Chairman of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.

Addressing at the occasion, Tariq Sayeed, former President of SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry that Asia had its own economic strength which can be gauged from the fact that China, Japan, India, South East Asian and South Asian countries forms 50 per cent of the global economy, handle 60 per cent of the world trade and provide more than 70 per cent of the global population.

"The existence of three economies (China, Japan and India) amongst top 5 of the world provides enough domains for intra-Asia economic cooperation to mitigate the impact of global imbalances and the Western World," said Mr. Sayeed.

VP SAARC Chamber of Commerce Iftikhar Ali Malik said that instead of entirely depending upon on EU and NAFTA, focus should be diverted to intra-Asia cooperation.

He suggested to encourage and promote greater market access  between China and South Asian countries, exchange of FDI, relocation of technology, interchange of labour and capital intensive industry, develop human resource, innovative and high-tech industrialization, harmonization of standards.

Malik also called for creating business enabling environment and to reinforce each other's economies by taking futuristic measures.

Minister of Industry and Commerce of Sri Lanka Rishard Bathiudeen, Deputy Minister of Commerce and Industries of Afghanistan Topgyal Dorji, President of Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Kalpana Shrestha, Under-Secretary of Ministry of Commerce and Supplies of Nepal also addressed the inaugural session.

[Media-Tribe] Re: [Pak-Media] PR--Former Military Leaders Review Pak-US Relations

Dear All,
Much expected but not a surprise there! The president Obama and the leaders of other major NATO countries didn't spare time for formal meetings. As far as the expectations from foreign minister is a no go from the get go though she had been peddling back and forth to get a door pass that mission is accomplished.
Now leaving at parliament to initiate a national debate is yet another myth considering the qualitative composition of the parliament?
"It was agreed that all the above issues emanate from a crisis of policy failure." Rather policies failure!
The US-Pakistan relations hit rock bottom not in few days but systematically in last four years calibrated by the events every time creating new threshold. What current government is doing achieving milestones?
The Narcissistic foreign minister busy in a glamour shot and convicted Prime Minister wants Pakistanis to leave if they are not happy! Perhaps a great deal of this is emanating from self-interest alone which in a nutshell rightly concluded in the meeting.
Best Regards
Kadar

Former military leadership on Saturday said outcome of the Chicago Summit was disappointing as Pakistan was dealt as an accused.

Our Foreign Office should have advised President Zardari to stay at home as US President Obama and leaders of other major NATO countries couldn't spare time for formal meetings with him.

Opening of NATO supply route is awaiting a US apology for Salala massacre but arrogance of power is barring her from saying 'sorry'.

This was observed when the Executive Council of The Pakistan Ex-servicemen Association (PESA) discussed the US-Pakistan relations. Participants included Lt. Gen Ali Kuli Khan, Air Chief Marshal Kaleem Saadat, Air Marshal Masood Akhtar, Vice Admiral Ahmad Tasnim, Lt Gen Naeem Akbar, ex-ambassador Salim Nawaz Gandapur, Brig Mian Mahmud, Brig Syed Masud ul Hassan and others.

They said that Pakistan has served US interests for over six decades but our sacrifices and contributions have been totally forgotten which is evident from the anti-Pakistan attitude of the US Congress.

NATO containers have been having free rides for the past 11 years, causing damage worth billions to infrastructure and now our demand for charges is being termed as extortion which proves that bilateral relations have reached their lowest ebb, they added.

United States used Pakistan till the end of Cold War, now her strategy has changed, she want to contain China by building up India as a regional super power. Nuclear Pakistan is considered a hurdle in the scheme therefore US has decided to destroy its economy and the military, it was observed.

Moreover, the American support for separatist movements is aimed at Balkanization of Pakistan.

The invasion of Afghanistan was, in reality, a declaration of war against Pakistan with a view to achieving their nefarious objectives. Having failed to achieve these objectives in the last 11 years, they are now acting in desperation to complete the job by 2014.

Through a well calculated plan, Leon Panetta has brought about a sea change in the thinking of Americans towards Pakistan. Its condemnation has become a must for anyone who wants to survive in the American politics.
Many Americans are now calling Pakistan their No. 1 enemy and persuading their government for nuclear strikes, it was noted.

Dr Shakil Afridi is guilty of working for a foreign intelligence agency in return for financial gains which is a crime. America has punished renowned Kashmiri leader Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai on charges of working for ISI.

How come US convicts Fai in a crime and declares Afridi innocent for the same offence; they said adding that the American stance clearly indicates duplicity.

Aid cut and other threats over Dr Afridi's conviction are sheer blackmailing which will make relations more problematic.

The US has placed its cards on the table. It is now for the people of Pakistan to decide whether they would like to keep standing as a free nation or go down on their knees begging for mercy and a fistful of dollars.

It was agreed that all the above issues emanate from a crisis of policy failure. Everyone wants that decisions must be based on vital national interests but no one has described these national interests in specific terms. Are these a bundle of dollars to balance our budget or are there some higher values that we must protect.

The parliament must initiate a national debate to finalize agreed set of national vital interests and national values. That is the only way to develop true national consensus and have people's support in critical times, the meeting concluded.

[Media-Tribe] PR--Martyrs` Day (Youm-e-Shuhada) being observed today

Youm-e-Shuhada To Be Observed Today

ISLAMABAD- April 20

Youm-e-Shuhada is being observed on Monday (April 30th) throughout Pakistan to remember the 35,000 innocent civilians killed during terrorist attacks, including women, children and old people and over 3000 military and security personnel fighting valiantly against the terrorists.

The day will begin with special prayers in mosques after Fajr prayers for the eternal peace of the departed souls and a resolve to defeat the terrorism and uproot it permanently.

On Youm-e-Shuhada, the people will pay tribute to Armed Forces and its agencies in sacrificing their lives in fighting terrorism. The relatives of the victims will restate their demand that terrorists should be brought to justice.

In fighting war on terrorism no special laws have been made by parliament, therefore over 1000 hardcore terrorists had been acquitted by the courts due to existing laws and they have become even more dangerous after release.

If special laws are not made the courts may continue to put agencies in the stand which will give more leeway to the terrorists.

USA has made patriot law to deal with terrorism, while UK, India and Sri Lanka had also strengthened laws against terrorism. People urge that why our parliament can't do that.

War on terror is the war of nation therefore the nation supports armed forces and its agencies in fighting war on terror and salute those who sacrificed their lives in defending the motherland against terrorists.###
