When we start trading goods, we then stop trading bullets.

China is 10 times more powerful than India, but the Chinese prefer to trade goods with India rather than bullets in order to benefit their ordinary people.

Unfortunately, some prefer to trade bullets to benefit a few.

Let’s stop biting our noses to spite our faces.

When we do not help others, then we also do not help ourselves.

Islamabad: April 30

SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry has termed the 5th round of secretary-level talks between Pakistan and India to push commercial ties a step in the right direction.

Local business community as well as traders across the Saarc region are very encouraged by the development, it said.

Speaking at a meeting here at Saarc Secretariat, he said that Pakistan should accord Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status to India while they should remove barriers to create an enabling environment for trade.

The two countries also need to discuss a bilateral preferential treaty to boost economic growth aimed at reducing poverty, he said adding that only economic engagement can bar undesirable conflicts.

Iftikhar Ali Malik said that Pakistan and India should develop more routes for passengers and freight traffic to build trust. It will boost Pakistan’s economy with textile and cement sector major beneficiary which is the backbone of our economy and largest urban employment provider, he said.

He welcome the understandings reached during the talks and lauded the decision of the negotiators to boost engagement between the private sectors of the two countries which will go a long way to improve confidence level, dispel misunderstandings and allay misapprehensions.

Malik demanded to include private sector representatives in the group of experts to trade electricity, petroleum products, Bt. cotton seeds etc, adding that we should share energy, water, research and commodities.

He informed that he would lead a 40-member delegation of Dhaka to participate in Saarc CCI meeting scheduled on May 16 to find out ways to increase intra-Saarc trade which is presently below 5 per cent.

“We are will meet president of prime minister of Bangladesh with to boost bilateral trade and cooperation,” he said.

Iftikhar Ali Malik further said that it has been decided to establish permanent head quarter of Saarc CCI in Islamabad.

At the occasion, Malik Sohail Hussain, Chairman Media, FPCCI said that Pakistan and India should help develop each other so that who region could be developed which is home to majority of global population.

No spectacular decisions were made in talks due to political differences but the move will help improve the environment to achieve greater goal of prosperity, he said.

Poverty reduction is impossible until normalisation of relations so that they can spend properly on health and education, he said adding that cordial relations are in the interest of all stakeholders, said Malik Sohail.

India should remove excessive red tape on Pakistani exports after which Islamabad will be obliged to grant MFN status to New Delhi, he said.

Business Community Doubs PBC Intentions

Islamabad: [April 30]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Saturday said business community is sceptical about the real motives of newly formed Pakistan Business Council (PBC).

They feel that there is a distance between cited objectives of the PBC elite and their real intentions, it said.

It is generally believed that PBC comprise of many that belong to famous 22 richest families of Pakistan, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.

Members of PBC are also members of powerful lobbies like that of textile and sugar millers, automotive manufacturers and urea, pharma and cement producers; yet they have established another unregistered body to push for their goals, he said.

It is generally conceived that PBC has been formed to get hold of national industrial assets in the name of privatization, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal while talking to Joint Secretary National Traders Alliance Muhammad Amin Pirzada, former president KPK CCI Haji Haleem Jan, Chairman Marble Association Shahid ur Rehman, General Secretary Anjuan-e-Tajiran Malik Mehr Elahi and others.

He said that PBC has nothing to do with sufferings of masses; they are conspiring to weaken the business community in a bid to hijack whole system with the help of their political masters.

The business leaders expressed astonishment that rulers would never find time to meet representatives of traders, industrialists, business chambers even the officials of Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry but would always find time for PBC, an illegal body.

On the occasion, Haji Haleem Jan said that masses and Supreme Court will never allow sale of national assets on throw away prices like the rulers did in recent past. They conspiracy to create gulf between government and business community would be foiled.

Shahid said that Pakistan People's Party would always talk about poor people but would make secret deals with those who always suck the blood of the masses to make illegitimate money.

They have nothing to do with national interests, they are driven by their own petty interest, remarket Pirzada.

Demands of MFN status to India unjustified

Special status to Pakistan remains counter productive

New Delhi never granted unconditional MFN status to Pakistan

Islamabad: [April 27]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Tuesday said demands to accord Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status to India are against the economic and national interests.

The local business circles demanding MFN status to India are not fully aware of the repercussions of such a move, it said.

Pakistani importers may save a billion dollars per year if India is declared MFN but it can damage local industry, increase infiltration, and trigger terrorism, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.

He said that India granted MNF status to Pakistan in 1995 but it proved to be a trick as local exports could not pick up due to the non-tariff barriers that include different clearances, inspections, certifications, specifications, labelling, marking and packaging rules etc.

In addition, India has also imposed a number of de facto trade barriers to stop Pakistani exporter from making inroads in its market, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal.

That is why India has kept a soft tone in its demand for MFN status by Islamabad as she knows that they never granted real MFN status to Pakistan.

"Political relations between the two countries are unlikely to become stable soon therefore it is not advisable to increase dependence on India," he said adding that strategic considerations also matter in the overall scenario.

He said that enhanced bilateral trade with will boost human traffic flow making it difficult to check infiltration. A strain in relations can push the two countries to ditch commitments as experienced in past.

India would only be justified in demanding special status if she removes trade barriers and provide opportunities of Pakistani exporters, he said.

Indian should also change its attitude which is compelling Pakistan to divert resources to less desirable sectors which is barring development and pushing poverty, said Dr. Mughal.

Missing Pakistani Journalist Reappears After 3 Months 18 Days

Fawad Ali Shah, a Peshawar, Pakistan based journalist who caught attention and invited wrath by exposing Blackwater/CIA activities in Pakistan has reappeared after 3 months and 18 days of illegal detention.

He is disliked for his reports against corruption in government departments, specially police, FIA and other agencies.

He was abducted on 10th of January and released today after severe mental and physical torture as well as threats.

He was repeatedly shifted to underground facilities in different cities where he came to know about some horrifying facts and how the angles look at civilian setup as well as superior courts.

Before release, he was directed to tell friends and family that he was not abducted rather he was unable to contact anyone as he was in Afghanistan.

His mental and physical state is not very stable and it seems that he is also worried.

He can be reached on 0333-9301323 or 0321-9188073.

Saarc CCI supports MFN status to India

Dated: April 26

Islamabad: Welcoming the upcoming Commerce Secretary level talking between Pakistan and India, the SAARC Chambers of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) has supported demand to accord most favoured nation (MFN) status to India to widen economic and regional co-operation and accelerate development.

The two countries should remove trade barriers, abandon tensions and support each other following the pattern of European Union so that both can excel, said Vice President SCCI and veteran trade leader Iftikhar Ali Malik while speaking at a meeting of World Punjabi Forum (WPF) at New Delhi.

He said that we are here to promote peace, condemn terrorism and give message of love and brotherhood on behalf of Pakistani business community.

Iftikhar Ali Malik, who is also president of WPF, Pakistan Chapter said that the two countries should eliminate visa restrictions and establish visa facilitation desks at all embassies and consulates.

"Lack of product sharing and high cost of doing bilateral business has been inflicting great losses on the people of Pakistan and India which must end," he demanded.

The trade leader said that we should restore communication links, enhance business activities and promote tranquillity to end mistrust which is keeping millions below the poverty line on both sides of the divide.

He said that Indian electricity, diesel, Internet data and expertise are most welcome provided continuation in supply and concrete steps to balance the mutual trade are guaranteed by New Delhi.

SVP Saarc CCI Vikranjit Singh Sahney who is also President of Indian Chapter of WPF said that we want that both countries should live in peace and receive equal trade advantages.

We are tied in several affinities therefore we must promote love, affection and harmony as our past and future is tied together, he underlined.

Speaking on the occasion Chairman Media Committee FPCCI Malik Sohail Hussain said that he especially travelled through 'Dosti Bus' to participate in the meeting. "It was a great journey during which I felt honoured," he said adding that he will never forget respect and hospitality of Indian brethren.

He demanded other moves like Bus Service to bring people of two countries together.

Malik Sohail called upon automakers to support Pakistani automotive industry which is in distress over supply chain disruption from Japan.

Others present on the occasion included Deputy General Secretary Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Ambika Sharma, Chairman NRC Industries Rabindar Singh, Sarabjit S. Chadda, Surjit Singh, Chairman FPCCI Capital Office Hameed Akhtar Chadda, Indian industrialist B.S. Aanand, GS WPF Ali Badr and Arshad Alam. Indian offer to export power to Pakistan unviable

A financially, politically unfeasible move by an energy deficient country

Indian offers an attempt to make Pakistan a satellite state

Islamabad: [April 24]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday said Indian offer to export electricity to Pakistan is not a viable option.

It is a diplomatic initiative by an energy deficient country to get free publicity at a time when Pakistan is facing a shortfall of 6000 megawatt, it said.

India, the sixth largest consumer of electricity, is fruitlessly trying to bridge the gap between demand and supply since decades to achieve high rates of growth on sustainable basis, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW).

However, she is facing the around 20 per cent power deficit and 42 per cent transmission and distribution losses, one of the highest in the world, he said.

India's population which is 17 per cent of global count can only consume 3.5 per cent of international energy consumption which is a serious threat to its future, he added.

Indian power sector is inefficient, heavily dependent on state subsidies and rate of return is negative up to 30-40 per cent.

Therefore, it is impossible for Indian leadership to export power to Pakistan on the cost of their population and industry. It is financially and politically unworkable as there is not a single town or industrial estate in India which is not facing load shedding, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal.

Our government should stop looking for easy options to overcome power shortfall and utilise its full installed capacity which is currently being operated on roughly 50 per cent efficiency, he opined.

Before offering electricity, Indians should have considered the decision of Pakistani authorities not to buy internet data from India which is available at a distance of only 18 kilometres from the border, he said.

Moreover, he said, one of the reasons India walked out of the Iran gas deal was to deprive Pakistan of expected economic benefits. How come ruling coalition accept Indian offer to pay them for electricity in the much needed foreign exchange, he questioned.

India offers will not result in any economic miracle in Pakistan but it can pave way for Indian designs to transform Pakistan into a client state, said Dr.  Mughal.

Press Release

Baloch Human Rights Council (UK) strongly condemns the brutal and inhuman killings of Sindhi Nationalist leaders by the death squads of Pakistani intelligence agencies.

BHRC believes that the barbaric killings of prominent Sindhi nationalist leaders, Sirai Qurban Khuhawar, Senior Vice Chairman of Jeay Sindh Mutahida Mahaz, and Roplo Choliani is the continuation of the state policy of suppressing the genuine demand of Sindhi people by physically eliminating the Sindhi Nationalist Leadership.  It should be noted that the same policy is being implemented in Balochistan. The state security agencies are selectively killing the Baloch political activists and the actions of the Pakistani military establishment in Sindh are the replica of the same policy.

BHRC demands for the establishment of an international commission to investigate the genocide actions of Pakistani state in Sindh and Balochistan.

BHRC strongly call for the greater cooperation and collaboration between Sindhi and the Baloch national resistance in order to face the common enemy.
