Energy Decisions: Govt reducing country to Stone Age

Govt policies made life of masses a misery in 2011

Business community loses hope, no relief in sight in 2012

Dated: Dec 31

Islamabad: Samina Fazil, founder President, Islamabad Women's Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IWCCI) on Saturday said the incumbent government failed to provide any relief to masses in 2011.

Controversial policies and unpopular decisions have made life very difficult for masses and business community, she said.

The present incapable setup is not expected to bring any change in the next year, said Samina Fazil while speaking to the women entrepreneurs.

She said that there is no shortage of gas and electricity in the country. Gas is being silently provided to some influential sectors while electricity sector is victim of mismanagement where thefts have touched 24 per cent of total production.

Samina said that recent CNG decision will hurt millions of families and businesses, bring new wave of price hike and add to the unemployment and uncertainty as well.

In 2011, on average masses braved 8 hours of load shedding, experienced CNG closure in summer, faced closure of thousands of businesses, saw three per cent fall in GDP, dwindling rupee and unprecedented rise of dollar, political uncertainty, scams worth billions and international disgrace, she observed.

Samina said that the critical sector of petroleum and natural resources is being run as a hospital which proves concern of rulers towards grave issues and plight of masses.

Country is reeling under various issues but the rulers lack interest, care or feeling which is ample proof of their tall claims of pro-poor policies.

She said that business community has lost any hope in the rulers who according to returns do not own a car but lives like emperors.

No relief is in sight in 2012 in the presence of an incompetent cabinet, she observed.

At the occasion other members of IWCCI said that Dr. Asim and his likes are harassing masses on the behest of his friend to divert attention of masses from failures of the government and widespread corruption.

Dear Moderator:

During Memogate hearing on Thursday, Asma Jehangir, the lawyer of former Ambassador Hussain Haqqani made remarks against Pakistan army in a scheme to undermine institution which is held in high esteem by the people of Pakistan. Asma Jehangir approach is an extension of some politicians who wants to poison public opinion through their toxic criticism in an effort to damage sole functioning institution of the country.

Asma Jehangir should with withdraw her comments which are abhorrent and offensive for millions of Pakistanis. The foundation of her arguments must not based on premise be to smear the institution responsible for country's defense.

Best Regards

Dear Dr. Murtaza Mughal:

ASA! I am a retired Aerospace Physicist residing in USA. A local Corporation was set up in 2003, by like minded people to assist Pakistan through Renewable Energy Technologies (Solar & Wind) to alleviate not only the Energy Crisis in Pakistan, but also POVERTY (directly linked to Energy & Light). Since that time we faced one hurdle after another in this effort.

In November 2011, I went to Pakistan to assist in setting up a similar corporation in our native land, and once again faced similar hurdles to participate in such a corporation even as an investor uless one posesses "National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis." In order to apply for one I went to Pakistan Consulate  in Houston, TX [50 miles (one way) in a city with 80-miles diameter] and ran into further hurdles due to im-properly filled application (which had all the info in English language but did not have the same in Urdu on the same line, and impression of left Thumb in addition to signatures (my wife and myself) in English language. The best and most courteous staff of a Consulate in U.S.A, we found are the staff of Chineses Consulate assisting people, rather than creating hurdles through trivial constraints. The man assisting at the window seemed to be in rush to leave for lunch after entertaining 13 visitors (as indicated above the window in bold Red LED numerals). After pointing out these mistakes he just left the room to take his lunch. We wanted to visit the REST-Rooms (Toilet) before embarking on 50-mile return journey to our home, and we did not find any roll of Toilet paper in visitors Toilet-room, either.

Now here is a very serious SECURITY problem which has been found time and time again. The visitors enter through the back-door linked to the Parking Lot. This door had two peculiarities (1) Sign on the door; and (2) the LOCKS for Security no Consulate staff was present on first floor, because of the current wave of Islamo-phobia resulting in un-expected acts of terror.

Sign above the Door read the following:

Working Hours:

9:30 AM to 12:30 PM Preparation of Documents

12:30 PM to 3:30 PM - Break for Preparation of Documents

3:30 PM to 5:00 PM Delivery of Documents

LOCKS ON THIS BACK DOOR: ( VISITORS Enter only through Back-door or Parking Lot).

Top: Dead-bolt Lock (which can only be locked from inside after visitors leave)

Bottom: Regular lock (wich can only be latched from inside). When no staff is present on the first floor, and visitors are left on their

own to leave any time, there is no one present to lock the door from inside, i.e. both are UNLOCKED. Now if a miscreant is present

watching the observers leave, he or she can not only place explosives inside causing damage to the property, and life. The staff is not

AWARE of the Safety Concerns, while everyone undergoes through such a Check-Up  these days.

We are not only assisting Pakistan through our knowkledge of Energy Technologies but by INVESTING Money in Pakistan to make our efforts a successful Venture.

The last Questions were related to RELIGION, which any Embassy or Consulate ever asks Visitors or investors.

Now going through new calasthanics, we will have to re-submit these forms to Pakistan Consulate in Los Angeles, Calif., along with required Fee (Bank Draft).

Overseas Pakistanis need encouragement

EC decision distresses overseas Pakistanis

Islamabad: [Dec 29]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Thursday said Pakistanis working abroad have a critical role in the economic development of the country therefore they should be encouraged.

Remittances support millions of needy, reduce poverty and inequality and help government counter impact of dwindling foreign capital inflows, it said.

Pakistan is among top 10 recipients of remittances; it is among the few countries which include these funds separately in the gross national income estimates, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President of the PEW.

Talking to Masood Khan, Vice Chairman, Overseas Pakistanis Foundation, he said that those who are sending around one billion dollar a month to Pakistan—around 6 per cent of the GDP-- merits due attention.

He said that recent decision of the Election Commission to bar dual nationality holders from contesting elections will not go down well with expatriates. It is against the basic human rights of Pakistanis living abroad that are as loyal as any other citizen is, he added.

Dr. Mughal said that those keeping the morale of poor economy high should not be demoralised.

At the occasion, Masood Khan said that the dual nationality ban hurt millions. They are not abroad for fun, majority have opted for dual nationality for the sake of survival.

EC’s biased decision will deprive many of their legitimate rights. It  can compromise their willingness to invest in Pakistan, said Masood Khan who is also the Consulate General of Lithuania in Pakistan.

Secretary General PEW Mirza Riaz said that the controversial decision has shaken confidence of expats which should be taken back immediately.

We cannot afford a fall in remittances at a time when economy is crumbling and there is hardly any investment in public sector development, industry and infrastructure, he said.

Pakistan has no future sans Iran gas

Govt delaying gas import to please US

India cannot ignore nearest gas reserves

PTI asked to keep energy top priority

Islamabad: [Dec 27]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Tuesday said government has been purposely delaying import of Iranian gas to please America which is damaging Pakistan's economy.

Pleasing US on the cost of country is unfortunate; it suggests that government is dominated by incompetent and apathetic officials, it said.

Pakistan cannot secure its future without Iranian gas, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President of the PEW.

Controversial measures like banning use of CNG kits in new and old cars and plans to cut supply to CNG filling stations for months in a country with world's highest consumption make no sense, he added.

He said that protests across the country will force the government to take back the policy decisions which can only increase transportation costs for masses.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that Iran has brought pipeline to border and now Islamabad should immediately start building remaining portion of the pipeline.

Decades have already been wasted in discussions and modifications, further wastage of time will jack up costs and leave the industry uncompetitive in the international market, he warned.

Iran produces 5.5 trillion cubic feet of gas per year; it will sell 740 million cubic feet of gas per year which will address around 30 per cent of our gas deficit, he said.

The 42 inch diameter pipeline has the capacity to deliver one Bcf per day, he informed.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that rulers seems unconcerned about over 2 per cent yearly fall in the GDP, over 25000 crumbling industrial enterprises, and untold miseries to the masses.

He observed that the performance of local exploration sector remained dismal despite knowing that our gas fields will be exhausted by 2025.

Interests of the foreign companies that continue to work in the restive regions prove that the business is still profitable for foreigner investors, he said.

American will continue to oppose gas pipeline and do nothing to resolve chronic shortages except offering economically unviable alternatives, Dr. Mughal noted.

Despite sanctions, Iran is India's second major source of crude; it could be Pakistan's major source of gas, he opined.

He asked India to take bold decision of joining the project after getting MFN status as it cannot ignore its nearest gas reserves for long.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal asked Imran Khan to keep energy security top priority.

NATO supply cut hurting Pakistan's economy

Oil tankers stranded at borders are live bombs

Ports, border points becoming storage and parking areas

Congestion hurting trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan

Islamabad: [Dec 25]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday demanded steps to avoid losses to the economy after suspension of the NATO supplies.

Government should continue to cut vital supply line but chalk out a plan to keep economy clear of any negative impact, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President of the PEW.

Talking to leading transporters including VP, ICCI Shahid Zaman Shinwari, he said that the Nov 26 decision to cut NATO supplies has resulted in clogging at seaports.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that piled up supplies are impeding commercial activities which is resulting in losses to all the stakeholders.

Seaports and border stations are transit points which should not be allowed to become choked storage or parking area, he said.

Shahid Zaman Shinwari said that containers and takers have also created congestion at Torkham and Chaman which is hurting trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The situation has also created shortage of commercial vehicles pushing up Karachi-Peshawar per trailer shipping cost by around Rs 30,000, he said adding that hike in cost and delays has a negative impact on overall fragile business environment.

Demanding immediate removal of containers, Shinwari said that Afghan-bound Nate's huge logistics chain mainly consist of fuel which can be called as living bombs.

Others present on the occasion included Ch. Azad, Mushtaq Afridi, Pervez Shinwari, Haji Syed Kand, Ismail Shinwari and others. They lauded the decision to slap embargo on NATO goods in the wake of aggression.

They informed that majority of transporters ferrying supplies have cancelled their deals with Karachi based companies facilitating NATO after Mohmand Agency aggression.

They supported the moves to boycott Bonn conference, rejection of American findings and compensation offer terming it insufficient grounds for restoring supply lines.

Transporters also rejected US claim of poor coordination behind deadly strike and condemned her stubborn attitude. Russia should also slash NATO supplies to Afghanistan, they said.

Media-Tribe> News--Uthmankhel Jirga at Mohmand Agency

Press Release

Saturday, Dec 24, 2011

Tribe Calls for FATA Development and Transparency in Funds—Uthman Khel Qaumi Movement (UQM).

A grand Jirga of 400 selected notables of Uthmankhel Tribe was held at Navi Kali, Prang Ghar, Mohmand Agency on Saturday, 24th December 2011. The Jirga was attended by all elders and notables of the sections and sub-sections of Uthmankhel Tribe living in different villages of Mohmand Agency. The Patron-in-Chief of Uthmankhel Tribe, Fasihuddin (PSP), said on the occasion that FATA needs real and visible development projects and research-based policies for social cohesion, de-radicalization, youth education instead of mere slogans, bookish reports, and reforms on papers. He criticised all the stakeholders including international community that no one is sincerely and honestly interested in developing FATA and organizing and educating the tribes due to many self interests involved in the new Great Game in FATA region, which unfortunately has added salt to the injuries of the poor and uneducated tribal population right from Bajaur to South Waziristan.

Haji Shah Wali Khan, President Uthmankhel Qaumi Movement called for unity in all the scattered sections of Uthmankhel tribe and lauded the role of Uthmankhel tribe elders in Mohmand Agency for joining the UQM. He demanded a separate tribal agency for the largest tribe of the country, i.e. Uthmankhel. He lamented that most of the funds provided for FATA development through NGOs are badly miss-used and not utilized on FATA population as no one can have the courage to enter into FATA for any real humanitarian assistance.

The occasion was also addressed by Mr. Malak Taj Mohammad, Malak Badree uz Zaman, Sazo Mullah, Malak Amin ur Rehman, Mr. Gulistan, Mr. Kamran Ibrahim, Malak Dost Muhammad, Malak Muhammad Gul, Malak Mulla Din, Mr. Umar Din, Malak Ghulam Nabi, Malak Gulzad Gul, and many others.

The gathering adopted some unanimous resolutions to the effect that: i) there should be one administrative division or tribal agency for more than one million Uthmankhel tribe; ii) the tribe will contest the next national election from Malakand, Bajaur, and Mohmand agencies under one banner; iii) the tribes condemn the shameful attack of NATO forces on Salala Check-post in Mohmand Agency; and iv) the tribe express solidarity with Pakistan Army in its efforts against lawlessness in FATA. The notables of Mohmand Agency nominated 24 representatives for the Central Council of Uthmankhel Qaumi Movement.

Media-Tribe> PR--Yellow Cab Scheme Unsatisfactory

Yellow Cab Scheme execution unsatisfactory

Donors consider such schemes ineffective, against market norms

Steps demanded to reduce failures in poverty alleviation measures

Islamabad: [Dec 18]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday said the much-publicised Yellow Cab Scheme is not coming up to the expectations due to mismanagement.

The scheme was launched on 14th of July 2011 with plan to distribute 2500 vehicles every month for eight months for the elimination of poverty and unemployment, it said.

However, the plan could not be executed properly as thousands of cars are rusting at different showrooms across Punjab awaiting delivery, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President of the Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW).

Authorities recently announced that 5000 applicants have won the lucky draw only to find that 4600 submitted fake documents, he said adding that verification process should have been completed before the balloting.

The Punjab government is yet to decide to hold another draw or invite fresh applications making it unlikely for them to distribute 20000 vehicles -- 16,000 Suzuki Mehrans and 4,000 Bolans –by the deadline, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal.

He said that proper measures should be taken to keep this scheme successful lest it meets the fate of Sasti Roti Scheme and Yellow Cab Scheme launched in early 1990s.

Billion were lost in the earlier scheme, it drained the exchequer, invited criticism, hurt local auto industry while thousands of cars were converted illegally, he said.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that all such schemes have weaknesses; recovery rate is lower, government has to pick up the losses and the political interference keeps the targeted group from benefit of credit.

Moreover, the lack of knowledge, collateral and security requirements stand in the way of the poor, he added.

International donors would not favour such schemes considering them ineffective and against the market-friendly system, said Dr. Mughal.

He demanded immediate action to avoid another addition to the failed poverty alleviation policies and programmes.

This is the most important of all because to understand how Reiki works on others you need to experience it on yourself. Reiki is a very powerful healing force and if you treat yourself on a daily basis for 20 minutes or so, it is unlikely that you will become seriously ill. Remember that no concentration is necessary when treating yourself, and you may treat yourself while watching television, a show or when you are chatting to friends. It is possible to treat oneself even when reading a book, holding the book with one hand and Reiking oneself with the other. Once Reiki is learned, you will find that you cannot keep your hands off yourself.

Reiki comes from two Japanese words, rei which means Universal Life Energy, and Ki which means a key or an opening. Reiki can then be interpreted as a key to universal energy.

The literal definition is the channeling of natural life energy through a human being to another living being or object, or the channeling of love in the form of natural energy.

There are five principles to follow in Reiki for successful lifestyle. Doctors say that most illnesses are stress induced. Stress originates in the mind and it is a product of our thought processes. Normally we spend our mental energy trying to manipulate our lives in order to achieve specific results.

Anyone can learn Reiki and everyone has the ability to perform it. The Reiki classes simply bring out that which is already inherent in a person.
