Reduced and Repeated

Indian Ravi Shankar a fake guru

Islamabad: [March 16]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Friday said credibility of famous Indian spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is questionable.

How come a person advocating love, peace and renouncing attachment to possession is enjoy princely living, it said.

It is normal in Hindu spirituality to trace lineage but Shankar would never mention his gurus on website or literature in a bid to avoid problems, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.

The Indian gurus would paddle simple living but own personal jets, fleet of expansive cars and properties worth billion, he said.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal added involvement of most of the spiritual leaders in crimes, and grabbing, deceit and forgery has become an open secret.

Gurus have no mystical powers but they can fake some of the so-called miracles, he said adding that they cannot cure illnesses beyond the capabilities of mainstream medicine.

He said that allowing Hindu spiritual leaders to open ashrams in Pakistan is height of our insensitivity.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that Yoga is not an exercise; its Hindu worship of the sun and moon as deities which is forbidden in Islam.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that government has banned entry of world's renowned Islamic scholars in Pakistan while Hindu yogis are being welcomed with open arms which show thinking of our decision makers.

Media-Tribe> Corrected PR--NHA becomes one of the most corrupt departments

Need for effective accountability apparatus underlined

Financial matters of ministers, departments need attention of authorities

Islamabad: [March 11]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday underlined the need for effective accountability apparatus in the country.

Financial matters of many ministries and departments needs urgent attention of the authorities to ensure proper utilisation of funds which will guarantee national development, it said.

Stories of corruption appearing in press, Auditor General's reports and Transparency International Pakistan's findings should not fall on deaf ears, said Mirza Riaz, Secretary General of the PEW.

Talking to a group of National Highways Authority (NHA) contractors, he said that almost every department is violating public procurement rules and other procedures.

Riaz said that NHA would swiftly transfer allocated funds to other projects and make adjustments in the finalised plans for achieving personal gains.

The department enjoys such an influence that agitations and accusations by Senators, MNA, Chief Ministers, PAC and resolutions in the assemblies would not force it to mend ways, he said.  ANP's persistent insistence on getting communication ministry in every coalition is amazing, he added.

He said that AG, NAB, FIA, PAC and TI-P have unearthed corruption cases to the tune of tens of billions in NHA which are tip of the iceberg. Adil Gilani has mentioned over 50 cases of corruption and irregularities but to no avail.

Blue-eyed contractors were paid despite poor quality of work while others are made to run from pillar to post for their dues, said Riaz.

The contractors informed that in Dec 2010 the Senate Committee on NHA termed it den of corruption. The then Chairman who would call contractors at home to strike deals with the help of GM Finance and Director Revenue.

Subsequently the then Chairman was removed but his cronies escaped, got promotions and they are still plundering the resources while Ministry of Communication has become a silent spectator, they informed.

The contractors said that the powerful mafia comprising member finance, director revenue and some others are calling the shots in NHA who have transformed this institution into a nursery of corruption.

After uproar on the national level, the NHA took some face measuring including dismissing 1800 employees while safeguarding the mafia. Shoaib Ahmed Khan, the head of the mafia got rapid promotions to become member finance from the post of GM Finance.

They lauded the move of Planning Commission to suspend the funds of NHA for spending Rs 20 billion in violation of the rules.

Media-Tribe> PR--India selling CNG for Rs 35, Pakistan 77

Govt claim of hike in CNG consumption debatable

Controversial steps to scare away potential investors

In India CNG sold for Rs 35.45/kg, Rs 77.12 in Pakistan

Islamabad: [March 09]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Friday said government's claim of an extra-ordinary 39 per cent hike in CNG consumption is arguable.

According to a CNG association, the consumption has witnessed a nominal growth of 0.4 per cent in 2011, it said.

How come CNG consumption increased when a good number of the filling stations remained closed for almost five months in 2011 due to load management, Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW questioned.

Data regarding consumption should not be kept secret, it should be made public so that all stakeholders and masses know the facts, he demanded.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that government is planning to lift prices of CNG to Rs 100 per kg which will affect almost every citizen of this country.

Decisions should not be based on consumption only; social benefit, tax contribution and other aspects should also be considered, he demanded.

A middle-size industry which consumes 10 MMcf natural gas is enough to keep 34000 cars running for a workweek.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that 57 per cent vehicles in Pakistan are using CNG. The consumption of 3.4 million vehicles is half the intake of two power plants owned by an influential politician.

Two more natural gas-fired power plants of the same political figure will be online soon for which ground is being prepares, he said adding that every Pakistan will be made to pay for that commercial venture.

He said that steps like ban on import of CNG kits and cylinders and import duty on CNG spare-parts have already raised concerns among investors from Japan, Italy, Argentina and China.

More steps to penalise the CNG sector will send wrong signals, further tarnish our image, and scare away potential investors. It will also contribute to environmental degradation.

He informed that CNG prices in New Delhi stands at Rs 35.45 per kg after six upward revisions during the current year while prices in two different regions in Pakistan stands at Rs 77.12 and Rs 71.35/kg.

Imported gas is being sold at economical rates in India while it is costlier in Pakistan despite being a locally produced resource, he said.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal demanded of the Chief Justice Pakistan to take note of the situation, stop distribution of gas on political basis, and take steps to safeguard the interests of oil and gas companies which are fed-up of increasing demands by the politicians.

Media-Tribe> PR--Masses, CNG, transport sector asked to resist unholy designs of rulers

Govt closing CNG stations indefinitely to please fertiliser sector

Unemployment, massive public protests feared

CJP asked to stop govt from usurping rights of masses

Masses, CNG, transport sector asked to resist unholy designs of rulers

Islamabad: [March 05]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Monday said government has decided to close CNG stations in Punjab indefinitely to please the fertiliser sector.

Unplanned measures of authorities will leave tens of thousands unemployed and ignite massive unrest, it said.

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court should take immediate notice of the illegal and unjustified decision to safeguard the basic right of the masses, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.

He said that government has targeted the province of Punjab where many CNG stations have been closed to provide gas to influential fertilizer sector.

Connections of 50 filling stations in the Pothohar region were disconnected on Monday despite the fact that many had acquired stay orders from courts of law.

Directives have been issued to disconnect the remaining stations as soon as possible, at any cost.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal informed that earlier, SNGPL issued notices to all 3500 CNG stations on March 3 through biggest courier company of country citing inability to provide gas anymore.

He said that before March 2008 gas companies used to sign contract with filling stations for supply of gas for 12 months. However, after 2008 agreements were signed for supply of gas for nine months. There was no mention of any load management in the agreements.

The move of the government will close 70 per cent CNG stations while remaining would be closed within.

Not a single CNG association has been taken on board before this controversial decision, he said, said Malik Khuda Baksh, Chairman and President of CNG Station Owners Association of Pakistan.

Majority of the CNG stations have already remained closed for three days a week, which make per year closure to around five months, he said.

He informed that he is rushing to Islamabad to finalise strategy with comrades to counter the move.

Masses, CNG and transport sector should resist unholy designs of ruling mafia, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal.

Media-Tribe> PR--Influence of HR orgs, disparities spreading side by side

Economic rights of masses being usurped

Economic revival linked to provision of human rights

Majority suffering from crisis of economic opportunity

HR advocates should strive to reshape economic thinking, practices

Influence of human rights, global economic disparities spreading side by side

Islamabad: [March 01]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Thursday said economic revival cannot become reality unless serious steps are taken to ensure protection of the human rights of the masses.

Economic rights of the commoners are being usurped while majority continue to suffer from crisis of economic opportunities that is threatening society, it said.

Unplanned response to the crisis related to economy, external challenges, law and order, food and fuel prices etc. are far from satisfactory which calls for an effective policy response, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.

Talking to Abdullah Malik, Advisor to Governor Punjab on Legal and Human Rights, he said that concrete actions based on broad-based national debate have become imperative due to pressing issues confronted by the country.

He said that on-going difficulties have opened alternative approaches and solutions awaiting right reaction by the authorities, NGOs and NGIs; they have an opportunity to strive for reconfiguration of economic thinking and practices.

Human rights organisations should understand and monitor national and global economic policies more closely and deepen their engagement with economic institutions, he added.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that with the increasing influence of human rights and the disparities on the global and national level are increasing which proves that something is wrong.

Abdullah Malik said law and order, terrorism, market regulation, and protection of public interests have become the subject of intense debate in Pakistan.

He said that redistribution of wealth through state intervention to ensure equity and prevent impoverishment needs more attention.

State should use all resources to fulfil economic, social and cultural rights of the masses, he added.

Human rights standards and obligations have yet to receive adequate attention in policies, said Abdullah Malik.
