Re: Media Tribe> Pakistan tried to exchange Davis for Al Qaeda Agent Aafia?

Dear Mr. Turkman,
Its sad to see your mail 'spammed' on a site that you were so enthusiastically participating in till just a couple of days ago.
There is no doubt that you are an intelligent gentleman and put up good arguments backed by your research on a given subject. However, you do go overboard by constantly trying to project U.S. Administration as a bunch of philanthropic angles. Yes, Muslims by and large are incompetent and foolishly choose to live in a fictitious era that never was as they tend to recall it. Of course, religion that many follow is nothing more than a mere accident of birth; as is race or culture. But you, as an intellectual, lose credibility by aiming your guns only in one way. I hold no brief for anyone. However, you tempt even a person like me to come out on the side of those whom you continuously criticize. I, at times, begin to doubt your tall claims of  high IQ and the rest.
I sincerely advise you to take up a course in communication and learn how to win an argument and yet not lose friends.
Sincerely,
Sarwar Sukhera

Subject: Media Tribe> Pakistan tried to exchange Davis for Al Qaeda Agent Aafia?

Pakistan trying to free a confirmed Al Qaeda Agent US Citizen from US Jail, convicted for Treason?

Now what other evidence Anti Pakistani Lobby in Washington needs to prove to Obama and the world that Pakistan is behind Al Qaeda and Al Qaeda Operatives that Pak Intelligence, ISI had handed over to USA were only because USA had offered millions of dollars as Bounty for each of them since Pakistan has done nothing besides that in last 9 years against Taliban and Al Qaeda?

------------

U.S. Nixed Deal To Swap Raymond Davis for Aafia Siddiqui

The government of Pakistan offered to trade a CIA contractor currently jailed in that country for a Pakistani neuroscientist suspected by U.S. intelligence to be an al Qaeda operative.

According to a senior American administration official and a Pakistani official involved in the negotiations to free CIA contractor Raymond Davis, the Pakistani government proposed trading Davis for Aafia Siddiqui, an MIT-educated Pakistani neuroscientist currently serving 86 years in federal prison for attempted murder.

The offer was immediately dismissed by the U.S. government. "The Pakistanis have raised it," the U.S. official said. "We are not going to pursue it."

The proposal is the latest in a series of efforts to break an impasse between Washington and Islamabad over Davis. The CIA contractor has been held by Pakistani authorities since late January for shooting and killing two men he says were following his car and tried to rob him.

Siddiqui was convicted of trying to shoot F.B.I. agents and military officers in an Afghanistan police station in 2008. Siddiqui had been arrested the day before after being found with a list of New York city landmarks and instructions on how to construct explosives.

In 2004, F.B.I. director Robert Mueller described Siddiqui as an "al Qaeda operative and facilitator." The F.B.I. had issued a global alert for Siddiqui and her first husband in 2003, for their suspected ties to al Qaeda. Siddiqui later remarried to an al Qaeda operative, who was the nephew of the 9/11 mastermind, Khalid Sheikh Muhammed. The husband, Ammar al-Baluchi is currently being detained at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Siddiqui was never charged with any terrorism-related crimes, however. Shortly after the FBI alert, she and her children disappeared, only to surface in Afghanistan five years later. Siddiqui has claimed she was held in secret American prisons, including Bagram airbase in Afghanistan, during that time. American officials have consistently denied that she was ever in American custody.

According to the Pakistani official, the Pakistan's government proposal called for Siddiqui to be transferred to Pakistan, where she would serve the remainder of her sentence in a Pakistani jail or under house arrest.

Siddiqui's case became a cause celebre in Pakistan last year when Pakistan's prime minister called for Siddiqui's exoneration and release.

Popular Pakistani sentiment held that Siddiqui, who also had a Ph.D. from Brandeis University, had been persecuted by the U.S. because she was an educated Islamist woman, someone who spurned the West despite her background.

According to the senior administration official and a Pakistani official, the U.S. government quickly made it clear to Pakistan that they would not entertain the possibility of trading Siddiqui for Davis.

The American official, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the record about the negotiation, said the offer was not being considered by the Obama White House.

The Pakistani official directly involved in the negotiations agreed, saying their Siddiqui proposal was a "non-starter" for the U.S. government.

Since the impasse began in the days after the January 27th shooting in Lahore, that ultimately led to the deaths of three Pakistani citizens, both sides have alternated between hard and soft approaches to end the diplomatic stand off.

U.S. and Pakistani officials told ABC News that early on, the White House threatened to close the three U.S. consulates and expel the Pakistani ambassador to the U.S. if Davis wasn't released. Pakistan's ambassador, Husain Haqqani, has denied that the White House made those threats.

The Associated Press reported last week that the Pakistani intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence, or ISI, has stopped speaking with the CIA over the Davis case and its perception that the Americans have been heavy-handed in their efforts to get Davis released. Citing a senior ISI official, the report described the relationship between the ISI and CIA as at the lowest point since 9/11. The U.S.-Pakistani relationship is considered crucial to ending the war in Afghanistan.

National Bank, ARY TV in 100 Million Deal

NBP Mafia Prove Mettle by Dictating Terms

Anchor Set to Resign if Programme Not Released

By Tariq Khattak

Islamabad:

The owners of ARY have reportedly agreed not to bring cases of massive corruption in the National Bank of Pakistan after assurance that they will get a soft loan of Rs 100 million.

The bank has started preparations to transfer funds to the Dubai account of the owners of ARY TV.

It may be recalled that ARY's anchor Dr. Danish on February 26th brought to lime light some corruption cases in the Bank including the issue of Dr. Mirza Ibrar Baig, alleged to be Indian spy.

He was called a security risk in the light of reports by civilian and military security agencies.

During his programme "Sawal Ya hai" Dr. Danish also announced to run another programme on Feb 27th. That programme was recorded but was never released.

Sources in the bank say that Anwar Majeed and Riaz Laljee, both close friends of President Zardari, perused the owners of TV channel to stop telecasting anything against National Bank.

Dr. Danish is said to be very upset about the developments and wants to resign. He says that he will join any group on one condition that the programme regarding National Bank would be telecasted first.

The situation also speaks of the strength of mafia ruling the roost in the National Bank.

It may be mentioned that Baig is chief of HR in the bank and he has successfully foiled all inquiries against him by offering jobs to the relatives of investigating officers, insiders said.

He recently resigned from the bank but the administration didn't accepted his resignation.

It may be recalled that the owners of ARY were main to get benefit of the successful attempt by Hussain Lawai, CEO Summit Bank, to transfer billions from the account of MCB to their account in Dubai.

Lawai remain absconder for a decade before being arrested by Interpol and later released by authorities giving him benefit of infamous NRO.

Lawai, close friend of President Zardari climbed ladders of success by grabbing three banks with the help of State Bank of Pakistan, the regulator.

PEW sees forex reserves under threat

Common ground on economic matters stressed

Islamabad: [Feb 27 ]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday said ongoing political struggle in Pakistan and international developments threatening oil supplies is a big threat to the national foreign exchange reserves that are presently at comfortable levels.

Opec and other oil exporting countries can hike output to arrest volatile energy prices, US should seek to control rising food prices while our government can focus on the factors that it can control, it said.

Government and opposition should try to bring political harmony in country so that proper economic measures can be put in place before it is too late, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.

Politicians should not try to rock the boat anymore; they should sit together for the sake of the country otherwise we may run out of foreign reserves soon, he warned.

This will leave Pakistan with no option but to ask for IMF loans which will again slap conditions that are seen by majority as a conspiracy against country, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal.

He said that economy cannot sustain without regular supply of energy but many related issued including that of circular debt has been tackled on ad hoc basis.

Heightening fiscal deficit and climbing debt servicing are posing serious threat to the economy, he said adding that country is unsuccessfully dealing with the task of raising revenues to defeat budgetary gap, which has been estimated to cross Rs one trillion mark.

FBR is to be blamed for low revenue generation and unjust tax system as many top officials seem to be more interested in personal welfare, he said.

He said that government is not resolving issues but printing excessive currency to generate funds despite warning by economists and reservations by central bank.

Anti-people alliances of rural elite and selected industries are not ready to pay their share in the national development which leave country with no option but to cut developmental expenditures and opt for a begging bowl, said Dr. Mughal.

Investment is declining in country while overall climate is far from satisfactory due to mishandling of many issues including war on terror.

Gravity of the situation has reached to an extent where private firms are approaching politicians to save their investments while some have conducted press conferences, he said adding that we have enough of politics, its time leaders should also think about economy.
