PM's visit: PEW lauds Chinese positive stance

Beijing's attitude to help Pakistan in the long run

Leaders use funds raised by taxes or aid with little scrutiny

Islamabad: [May 23]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday said Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani's visit to steadfast partner China has made it clear that Beijing wants us to do more to become self-reliant.

Chinese reluctance to provide cash support has not only brought limits of Beijing's cooperation to the limelight but also given message that they are eager to help Pakistan to stand on its own two feet, it said.

It is time to realise that no country can offer unlimited charity and we should not always try to get more out of trusted friends, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President, PEW.

Like America and Saudi Arabia, China's commitment to Pakistan has its limits that we must keep in mind; he said adding that we should learn to serve our interests without looking to others.

A reason for reluctance of donors and friendly countries is the fact that funds raised by taxes and aid is spent lavishly with little scrutiny, he said. The capability of our leaders to raise revenues and get benefit of foreign support has always remained questionable.

Despite shared perceptions on major issues, China has given message that it will never step into the shoes of United States, which is Pakistan's major donor, said Dr. Mughal.

We must understand that China has stakes in a developed and prosperous Pakistan. However, it will not risk its relations with other trading partners to please Islamabad.

Pakistan should stop over reliance over foreign aid and do something to tackle instability, terrorism, and incompetence which has made it a difficult friend, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal.
