UNIDO: Women can help reduce poverty by utilising skills
IWCCI: Economy to remain fragile without women's contribution
Utilizing women's abilities, equal access to financial services, facilities demanded
Islamabad: May 1
Islamabad: Ms Inez Wijngaarde, Senior Industrial Development Officer, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has said that women can help reduce poverty in Pakistan by utilising their skills if economic opportunities are expanded for them.
UNIDO aims at strengthening entrepreneurial and technical skills of women so that they can actively take part in economic activities after becoming more competitive, she said.
Wijngaarde said this while speaking at a meeting of Islamabad Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IWCCI) the other day.
She said that we aim to enable disadvantaged population groups to seize economic opportunities by capacity building.
Flanked by Shahina Waheed, National Programme Officer, UNIDO, Ms Wijngaarde said that competition is not a negative word as perceived in many parts of the world. Lack of competition discourages development and investment.
She said that many countries do not have separate business chambers for women like Pakistan which is a very positive development.
She stressed upon the women entrepreneurs to link them to development and tackle issues in a positive way.
"Women should not focus on problems but solutions, try innovation and add value to their products," she advised, adding that getting help of TV and e-marketing has become increasingly important.
She said that UNIDO will start Business Coaching Programmes to enable women develop a positive attitude towards entrepreneurship, business and self-employment to produce tangible results. Another five-year plan is in pipeline for capacity building of women, she informed.
At the occasion, Samina Fazil, President, Islamabad Women's Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IWCCI) said that she is looking forward for support from international bodies and NGOs in transferring skills and technologies to assist women.
She said that no nation can strengthen its economy without contribution of women. Pakistani women are capable enough but need proper guidelines and access to financial resources.
The current economic situation calls for greater roles of women who constitute 52 per cent of the population but are generally ignored; their contributions often go unrecognized, she said.
Policymakers need to acknowledge the invaluable contribution that women make and devise plans to utilize their abilities by providing equal access so that the trend of providing low-paid, low-productivity and vulnerable jobs with no or little basic rights can be changed, demanded Samina Fazil.
