The Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS) is holding the 14th meeting of its Coordinating Council on May 26-27, 2011, in Bogotá, Colombia. The meeting will be hosted by COMSATS' Centre of Excellence in Colombia, the International Centre of Physics (CIF), while its Director, Prof. Posada Eduardo Flórez, would chair the meeting of the Council for the first time. Prof. Posada was elected as the Chairperson of the Coordinating Council during its 13th meeting, held in Trieste, Italy (May 2010). The Executive Director COMSATS is the Ex-officio Secretary to the Council.

The Council, which comprises Heads of International S&T Centres of Excellence affiliated with COMSATS, meets annually to, inter alia, review the programmes and projects of COMSATS, and the matters affecting the membership of the Network. The interactions during the meeting are meant to strengthen South-South cooperation among developing countries to achieve common objective of science-led socio-economic development. The 16 International S&T Centres of Excellence are located in Bolivia, Brazil, China, Colombia, Egypt, Ghana, Iran, Jamaica, Jordan, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, and Turkey. Most of these Centres have confirmed their participation in the fourteenth Council meeting, while representatives from United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) and the IOR-ARC Regional Center for Science and Technology Transfer have been invited to attend the meeting as Observers. Also, Prof. Dr. M. H. A. Hassan, the former Executive Director TWAS (and the former Chairperson Coordinating Council), would be participating in the meeting as the honorary life-time member of the Council.

Besides the regular agenda-items, the Council is expected to deliberate on and finalize COMSATS' future Strategy Document; discuss the nomination of the Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) as new member of COMSATS' Network of Centres of Excellence; and review the activities and progress made by the Thematic Research Groups (TRGs) of COMSATS that were launched during 2010-11. A highlight in this regard would be the presentations by the Lead Centres of TRGs elucidating the collaborative group research activity undertaken by the members of their respective Groups.

COMSATS Headquarters' extensive endeavours to expand its membership and Network of International S&T Centres of Excellence would also be highlighted during the meeting.
