Women purposely kept backward: PEW

Economic authority must for women to shine: FPCCI

Islamabad: [June 08]

Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President the Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Wednesday said that women in Pakistan are intentionally kept backward for systemic subordination.

Budget has offered nothing to women entrepreneurs as no step has been taken to improve quality of life of women involved in micro or large businesses, he said.

Talking to Dr. Shehla Javed Akram, Vice President FPCCI, Fazal Elahi, VP FPCCI, Hameed Akhtar Chadda, Chairman FPCCI Capital Office and Malik Sohail Hussain, Chairman Media FPCCI and others, he said that ministries for women development have confused mandate which is not helping women entrepreneurs.

We have received many complaints that authorities don't cooperate when it comes to establishing a separate chamber for women, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal.

At the occasion, Dr. Shehla Javed Akram who runs largest pharmaceutical business in Punjab and serves as president of Central and North Punjab Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry said that women development ministries lack authority to support women entrepreneurs.

These ministries are focused on poverty alleviation, social welfare and microfinance, she said, adding that women cannot prosper in absence of economic authority.

She said that business women should be considered separate entity which can pave way for their development. Majority of women cannot provide guarantee for loans therefore this condition should be altered, she demanded.

She lamented low level of resource investment in women by the family and the state and their absence in decision-making.

The VP, FPCCI said that a serious plan is needed to broaden tax net as exempted sectors have not been brought into the tax net which cast doubts on government's will to generate additional funds by bringing additional taxpayers in the net.

Dr. Shehla further said that mere slogans will not help government to generate revenues. Only one per cent tax on some sectors will not only help document economy but also provide fund generations alternatives to the authorities, she said.

It will minimise load on industry which is reeling under multiple problems, she said.

Malik Sohail said that issues of industrial expansion, up gradation, and revival of sick industries have not been addressed in the budget.
