Economic rights of masses being usurped
Economic revival linked to provision of human rights
Majority suffering from crisis of economic opportunity
HR advocates should strive to reshape economic thinking, practices
Influence of human rights, global economic disparities spreading side by side
Islamabad: [March 01]
The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Thursday said economic revival cannot become reality unless serious steps are taken to ensure protection of the human rights of the masses.
Economic rights of the commoners are being usurped while majority continue to suffer from crisis of economic opportunities that is threatening society, it said.
Unplanned response to the crisis related to economy, external challenges, law and order, food and fuel prices etc. are far from satisfactory which calls for an effective policy response, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.
Talking to Abdullah Malik, Advisor to Governor Punjab on Legal and Human Rights, he said that concrete actions based on broad-based national debate have become imperative due to pressing issues confronted by the country.
He said that on-going difficulties have opened alternative approaches and solutions awaiting right reaction by the authorities, NGOs and NGIs; they have an opportunity to strive for reconfiguration of economic thinking and practices.
Human rights organisations should understand and monitor national and global economic policies more closely and deepen their engagement with economic institutions, he added.
Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that with the increasing influence of human rights and the disparities on the global and national level are increasing which proves that something is wrong.
Abdullah Malik said law and order, terrorism, market regulation, and protection of public interests have become the subject of intense debate in Pakistan.
He said that redistribution of wealth through state intervention to ensure equity and prevent impoverishment needs more attention.
State should use all resources to fulfil economic, social and cultural rights of the masses, he added.
Human rights standards and obligations have yet to receive adequate attention in policies, said Abdullah Malik.
